Am Baile - Highland History & Culture
ambaile.png

Am Baile was originally founded by a consortium led by The Highland Council. Together with partners Taigh Chearsabhagh Trust and West Highland Animation the team set out to create a digital archive of the history and culture of the Scottish Highlands and Islands.

The project was initially funded by the New Opportunities Fund and later received a financial contribution from Highlands and Islands Enterprise. Am Baile is now funded by the Highland Council and managed as part of Highland Libraries.

The website was launched in May 2003 and is still growing. It offers learning opportunities for users of all age groups, abilities and backgrounds by drawing together unique material which until now was difficult to access and presenting it in a user-friendly and often exciting way. Am Baile includes photographs, rare books and documents from archives, libraries, museums and private collections, contemporary art, oral histories, films, interactive games and comics.
