Strathpeffer & District Pipe Band was formed in 1980 to provide entertainment for residents and visitors in the village of Strathpeffer. They have been doing this each summer Saturday evening ever since, as well as playing at Highland Games and Gatherings across the north of Scotland. The “Strath Band” takes pride in nurturing young pipers and drummers, as well as retaining a strong core of long-serving members. Currently, the band has a strong family flavour with a number of sets of siblings, as well as father-son and father-daughter combinations.

Individually, a number of the band’s pipers compete very successfully on the north’s summer Highland Games circuit, and collectively the band compete well in occasional competitions. Rehearsals take place each Tuesday evening, summer and winter under the tutelage of Pipe Major James MacKenzie and the leading tip and drum tutor, John Mellis. It is this commitment to fostering talent of all ages that will help sustain the band in the future.

From their formation the band has turned out in the MacKenzie of Seaforth tartan. The Caberfeidh (stag’s head) cap badge is another symbol of the area, both this and the tartan of the band’s kilts forming part of the uniform of the Seaforth Highlanders, the local regiment. The band is rightly proud of its heritage and links to Strathpeffer and surrounding area.

Enjoy the band live on summer Saturday evenings in Strathpeffer Square – an appointment the band have not missed in almost 31 years

Saturday night performances have ended for 2012, however the Pipe Band will return to the Square, every Saturday night from May 2013 to September. See you there!
